Artemis 1 – CEROBEAR bearings on the way to the moon

Rolling bearings from CEROBEAR GmbH are on board of NASA’s moon mission. The bearing manufacturer from Herzogenrath has developed six different bearing types for the Artemis 1 mission.

About one week after its launch, the Orion capsule of NASA’s Artemis 1 lunar mission circled the moon in approximately 130 km. The CEROBEAR rolling bearings are located in the Orion capsule. They contribute to the safe sealing of the capsule during the entire flight in space.

The used angular contact ball bearings and tapered roller bearings were developed specifically for the mission requirements. They guarantee low bearing friction while maintaining the highest accuracy and long service life.

The currently unmanned mission is testing all the newly developed systems and how they work together – the Orion capsule, the rocket (Space Launch System) and the systems on Earth. The capsule is now scheduled to travel for three more weeks before it is expected back on Earth on December 11th.

Following a smooth course of events, it is planned that in the follow-up mission Artemis 2, astronauts will land on the moon already in 2024.
